Why scales?

Scales are like melodies, but in a way more structural.

A scale is a sequence of musical tones
arranged in ascending and descending order
that provides the tonal signature of a musical composition.

To me the fundamental aspect of music is the scale
Yes, there is an underlying philosophic concert to music,
but above that is the tonal signature of the work.

Change one tone of the scale and you get a different mode or style.
