IV. Buzzing on the horn mouthpiece

For all students it is important to be able to buzz with just the mouthpiece, or buzz just the lips. There are many fine brass players that swear by buzzing. I am a fine player and I swear, that buzzing is not an appropriate approach to horn playing.

In difficult days, such as with a bad cold, I find that buzzing helps but only rarely.

If you can do it, then you have learned it; move on.

I don’t sing by tightening my neck, no should we play horn by tightening our lips.

Relax and let the air out. Keep your lips open to let the air flow, making a beautiful resonate tone.

There is a technique that I work on with my students that can have tremedous results in improving tone. I will include this in my book on Natural horn playing.

Coming Soon:

My book about horn playing that has lessons for all musicians, not just Natural hornist:
